Do your best to come to me soon. For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. Luke alone is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry. Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus. When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments.
2 Timothy 4:9-13
Dale Bourdette (the outgoing Missions Committee chairman and current Clerk of Session) and I will be leaving Lake Wales in less than twenty-four hours to visit some of our missionaries. For safety reasons I cannot write who and where we will be visiting, though many of you are aware of the whos and wheres of the trip.
The main purpose of our going is to see first hand the work that the Lord is doing in and through the missionaries we support spiritually and financially. We also hope to be an encouragement to them through our presence and shared fellowship in Christ. We plan to write a brief blog each day to let you know as much as we can about the trip and give you prayer concerns to lift to the Lord throughout the week, so be sure to check the website daily or find the blog on our Facebook page.
The passage above (2 Timothy 4:9-13) was written by Paul to Timothy almost 2000 years ago. Paul made some personal requests here, near the end of his epistle, that are interesting. He wants Timothy to come to him soon because he is alone, save Luke. Mission work can be a lonely effort. Of course one is always with the Lord but the absence of the fellowship of believers can be wearisome. We certainly hope to be an encouragement to our brothers and sisters in Christ.
Paul also asks for some seemingly ordinary items – a cloak, some books, and his parchments. We too have been asked to bring a few things along with us. We may not think about it too much but getting material things usually found in the U.S.A. is not so easy in many foreign countries. Even though you can order anything from Amazon, shipping costs are not always within the budget. So, we are getting the opportunity to be couriers as well as encouragers on this trip, just like Timothy was all of those years ago.
Well, I trust you will be praying for us. Dale and I leave the church parking lot tomorrow at 10:45 am to begin our journey. I’ll try to post again some time tomorrow.
