Prayer Focus: Holy Week

THIS WEEK’S PRAYER FOCUS: Holy Week (Palm Sunday through Easter) is one of the most glorious and challenging times to worship the Lord. It is glorious because we have the privilege of remembering how our Lord Jesus Christ gave the ultimate sacrifice; his life, for our redemption. We are reminded that he rose from the dead, and lives and reigns with God the Father and the Holy Spirit. Holy Week is challenging because it is painful to review the terrible suffering, humiliation, torture, and pain that Jesus endured. The music of the Lenten season often reflects the suffering of the ...

  • Sermon on the Mount: The Blessing of the Law September 18, 2017 Matthew 5:17-20 This “Sermon on the Mount,” deals specifically with, as Dr. Sinclair Ferguson puts it, “Kingdom Life in a Fallen World.” After describing in detail the blessed nature of those in the Kingdom, Jesus now deals with the question of the Old Testament. The “Law and the Prophets,” was an ever-present part of life for ...
  • Sermon on the Mount: Beatitudes Revisited September 4, 2017 Matthew 5:3-12 This sermon will serve as an introduction to the Sermon on the Mount Series and an overview on the Beatitudes. For a more detailed treatment of the Beatitudes you can go to the sermon archive HERE and listen to the sermons from that series (Fall 2016). Kingdom Life In Matthew 4:17, “Jesus began to preach, saying, ...
  • Creed: Resurrection… Life Everlasting August 28, 2017 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 We close our series of sermons based upon the Apostles’ Creed by considering “the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting.” Resurrection and Transformation unto Glory Since the Ascension Jesus has been with us by the Spirit but away from the earth in His resurrected body. The promise in the New Testament is that ...
  • Creed: Forgiveness of Sins August 28, 2017 Romans 3:10-26 When we profess our faith using the Apostles’ Creed we say that we believe in the forgiveness of sins. When we make that profession we are using the phrase “forgiveness of sins” as a summary statement for salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. With that simple statement we are acknowledging ...
  • Creed: The Holy Catholic Church August 28, 2017 Ephesians 4:1-16 We come this week to the Creed’s statements of faith regarding the holy catholic church and the communion of saints. J.I. Packer’s words can serve as a helpful introduction: “It is by strict theological logic that the Creed confesses faith in the Holy Spirit before proceeding to the church… it is the Holy Spirit ...
  • Creed: Holy Spirit August 28, 2017 John 16: 4-15 After five Sundays of expounding the doctrines of the person and work of Christ Jesus, we turn our attention now to the Holy Spirit. The final four Sundays of our study will pertain to the Spirit and His work of making us new in Christ. In the coming weeks we will consider “the ...
  • Creed: He Will Come to Judge the Living and the Dead August 2, 2017 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 Revelation 20: 11-21:5 So far in our study of the Creed, every statement about Jesus has been historical, that is it has indicated something about who Jesus is, something He has accomplished, or something that happened to Him. This week we look into the future, anticipating the fulfillment of a promise for which we ...
  • Creed: He Ascended to Heaven July 24, 2017 Acts 1:6-11 What Happened, and Where Did Jesus Go? Acts 1:9, says that Jesus “was lifted up, and a cloud took him out” of the disciples’ sight. Does that mean heaven, the place where God dwells in all His majesty and glory, is in the sky somewhere, or in outer space perhaps? No, no Soviet cosmonaut would ...
  • Creed: He Rose From the Dead July 17, 2017 John 20: 1-23 Having looked in previous weeks at the incarnation and death of Christ, we turn our attention this week to His resurrection. The main text for the sermon will be John 20:1-23. The Historical Reality of Christ’s Resurrection The Creed, as do the Gospels, presents the resurrection of Christ as a historical reality. In other words, ...
  • Creed: Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord July 3, 2017 Colossians 1: 15-20 Just as the Apostles Creed finds it center in the section on Jesus, so Jesus is the core of our understanding of who God is, and how he has worked salvation for us. It has been well said that after the giving of Jesus, God had nothing left to say (Heb. 1:1). Thus, ...
